Gain new perspectives on VCE French through this one-day professional development program for educators.
With a focus on VCE French units 3 and 4, this course is designed to inspire innovative approaches to teaching through the close examination of unique resources and primary source materials across cinema, history and Object-Based Learning. Presented by eminent scholars in the field, attendees will have the opportunity to exchange ideas with fellow educators and discuss best practice in the teaching of French language and culture.
Before the commencement of the program, scholarly articles and other supporting materials will be distributed to attendees. These resources, and the lectures, will form the basis for discussions. A pedagogical kit will also be provided for each seminar.
Professional certificates of participation will be offered upon completion of the course and VIT applicable. This course will be taught in French and is designed for educators who are currently teaching VCE French units 3 and 4 or will in future, and who are familiar with the study design.

Exploring French identity at the margins in Céline Sciamma's Bande de Filles/Girlhood (2014) - Dr Andrew McGregor
This session will explore the representation of cultural diversity and social marginalisation in France via an analysis of Céline Sciamma's 2014 film Bande de filles/Girlhood. The film offers students and teachers of French an opportunity to engage with some of the most complex issues facing French society. It provides an invaluable female-led alternative perspective on the banlieue, so often represented in the cinema as an almost exclusively masculine domain by such influential films as La haine (Mathieu Kassovitz, 1995). Bande de filles is likely to be of particular interest to students and teachers as it engages with themes that are both universal and culturally specific, namely the personal challenges of coming-of-age, social exclusion, institutional marginalisation through the French school system, the legacy of colonisation, economic disadvantage, racial prejudice, sexism, gender and sexuality. These dynamics of diversity play out within the context of France’s integrationist cultural policy, which looms large on the horizon of Sciamma's film as it does for all French banlieue cinema, challenging the myth of a singular cultural identity at the core of French society. Following the screening of key scenes and our discussion of the film, we will workshop ideas for class activities and projects that will encourage students to engage with the film and to explore their own take on its themes by expressing themselves in spoken and written French.
On some French iconic symbols (object-based learning) - Professor Véronique Duché
This session will explore the usage of Object-Based Learning in the teaching of French history and culture. Using French iconic objects as discussion triggers for Outcomes in Units 3 and 4 as specified in the new Study Design, the session will offer an historical and cultural perspective on these symbols.
Vocabulary and symbols of revolution: 1789, 1968, 2018 - Dr Alice Garner
This workshop will explore the language and symbolism of revolution in France, looking at similarities and differences between events in France in 1789, 1968 and 2019. With VCE Unit 4 Areas of Study 1 and 2 in mind, we will investigate a range of resources - textual, visual and aural - that teachers and students of French can use to develop and enrich interpersonal and interpretive communication. Participants will be encouraged to work together and discuss their findings in French, and will also be provided with some useful resources to take away.

Dr Andrew McGregor
Andrew McGregor lectures in French Studies in the School of Languages and Linguistics at The University of Melbourne, where he obtained his PhD in French Studies. He completed a Masters in Film Studies at the Université de Paris I - Panthéon-Sorbonne and received a personal accreditation from the President of Cannes International Film Festival. Andrew is the founding co-editor of the Film Cultures series for Peter Lang Publishing, Switzerland. He lectures and publishes on French and European cinema and particularly on the representation and interpretation of cultural identities in film.
Professor Véronique Duché
A. R. Chisholm Professor of French
Véronique Duché has extensive experience in teaching French literature and linguistics. She has published many articles on French Renaissance literature and edited several 16th century novels. Her research explores theoretical problems and issues concerning genre as well as translation into French during the Renaissance. She also researches French-Australian relations, in particular during the First World War.
Dr Alice Garner
Teacher, historian and documentary presenter
With a background as a professional actor, Alice is a fluent French speaker and has a PhD in French history (University of Melbourne, 2001). She has published books on 19th-century French history, the Australian-US Fulbright program and university student experience. She is currently teaching VCE History (Revolutions) and French at Albert Park College.
