The University of Melbourne’s Adult Palliative Care courses provide an ideal introduction into essential aspects of palliative care. Courses are highly practical and delivered face-to-face at the university’s Shepparton Medical Centre, in partnership with the Centre for Palliative Care.

Throughout these full-day sessions, you will learn from leading clinicians renowned for their passion and expertise in the field. Upon completion, you will gain a certificate of continuing professional development (CPD) hours.

We have four one-day courses available at our Shepparton campus:

Pain Assessment Management in Palliative Care
Explore the pathophysiology of pain, evidence to guide practice, how to clinically assess pain/s, pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies for managing pain and case study discussions.

Symptom Assessment Management in Adult Palliative Care
Examine fatigue, gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea, vomiting, cachexia and anorexia, constipation, delirium, respiratory symptoms and a "Pandora's box" of other symptoms.

Palliative Care in Non-Malignant Contexts
Understand challenges related to dementia, HIV/AIDS, aged care, paediatric illnesses and neurodegenerative disorders.

Family Centred Palliative Care and Cultural Issues
Learn clinical and conceptual frameworks, cultural aspects of care, how to prepare family carers for their role and conduct family meetings, support and services for carers, and bereavement support strategies.

These courses can also be undertaken as subjects as part of the award courses Specialist Certificate in Palliative Care or Graduate Certificate in Palliative Care for further details.

The Centre for Palliative Care

Courses have been developed in partnership with the Centre for Palliative Care (CPC), which is part of St Vincent’s Hospital and a collaborative partner of the University of Melbourne. The Centre plays a state-wide role in palliative care education, with a focus on ensuring education is multidisciplinary and delivered by experts in their field.

Who should apply?

These courses are relevant for a wide range of health practitioners including doctors, general practitioners, nurses and allied health professionals who work in a range of care settings including paediatric care, aged care, acute care, community care, palliative care and cancer care.

Course fees

  • The course fee for 2019 is $450 + GST (per day)
  • The fees include course materials and catering (morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea)
  • All short course attendees will be provided with a certificate of attendance, identifying the number of CPD hours for the course
  • Note: Programs will only run if a minimum number of participants is achieved. Priority for place is given to award students
  • Spaces are strictly limited.

*Course discount

  • 20 course discounts of $225.00 are available thanks to the Hume Region Palliative Care Consortium
  • The workplace must be in the Hume Region (exceptions apply)
